Schools Partnership

Schools Partnership delivers sport-led learning and mentoring within schools, using rugby-based values to build confidence, raise aspirations and increase physical activity. It supports children in primary and secondary education to develop key life skills such as teamwork, resilience and respect, while establishing early engagement with Bath Rugby Foundation’s wider pathway of support.

What is Schools Partnership?

Schools Partnership is the umbrella for Bath Rugby Foundation’s school and community-based programmes.

Delivered in partnership with schools and community organisations, the programme uses sport as a tool to support young people who may face barriers to participation - particularly those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), social, emotional and mental health needs (SEMH), or those from underserved communities.

Sessions run during the school day and can include:

  • Inclusive PE sessions

  • Lunchtime sports and activity clubs

  • Small group mentoring and pastoral support

  • School fixtures and festivals

  • Transition opportunities into local rugby clubs and community activity

Every programme is designed to help young people experience the values of rugby - teamwork, respect, resilience and enjoyment - both on and off the pitch.

Who it’s for

Schools Partnership supports children and young people aged 5-15 (up to 25 for SEND participants) who may benefit from inclusive sport and additional support.

Young people may be referred through:

  • Primary, secondary and SEND schools

  • Local authorities and education partners

  • Community organisations and charities

Many of the young people we support face barriers to participation. In fact, four in five children with disabilities do not take part in regular sport, highlighting the need for inclusive programmes like this.

Progress in numbers

Through Schools Partnership, thousands of young people are experiencing the benefits of sport each year.

In 2024/25:

5,280
Children and young people reached through Schools Partnership.

1,532
Girls and young women engaged in sport through our programmes.

1,045
Young people with disabilities and learning needs supported.

These partnerships help us create inclusive spaces where young people can build confidence, develop life skills and create pathways to independence.

The difference it makes

Our programmes are designed to support young people both in school and in life.

Short-term outcomes include:

  • Increased confidence and self-esteem

  • Improved behaviour and engagement in school

  • Stronger social connections with peers

  • Increased motivation to take part in physical activity

Long-term impact includes:

  • Greater access to sport and healthy lifestyles

  • Stronger community connections

  • Improved wellbeing and resilience

  • Clearer pathways into sport, education and employment

Working together

Schools Partnership is delivered in collaboration with a wide range of partners including:

  • Local schools across B&NES, Wiltshire and Somerset

  • Premiership Rugby and the RFU

  • Local rugby clubs and community sports organisations

  • Activity alliances and inclusion partners

  • Charitable partners including Maddy’s Mark

Together, we are creating opportunities for more young people to experience the positive power of sport.

What schools say

Week on week, the children have been excited for their rugby session. The coaches have created opportunities for every child to take part, including those with additional needs. One child who normally struggles with PE has found a new confidence through rugby.

Referrals & school enquiries

Schools Partnership works directly with primary, secondary and SEND schools across Bath & North East Somerset, Wiltshire and Somerset.

If you are a teacher, SENCO, school leader or partner organisation and feel your students would benefit from inclusive sport, mentoring or additional engagement through Schools Partnership, we would love to hear from you.

Referrals and school enquiries are managed by our Community Manager, Jack Hill, who works closely with schools to tailor delivery to the needs of their students. Email: [email protected]

Maddy's Mark

Bath Rugby Foundation is proud to work in partnership with Maddy’s Mark to create more opportunities for girls and young women to access rugby in a safe, supportive and inspiring environment.

This partnership is built on a shared belief that rugby can be a powerful vehicle for personal growth. Through a focus on the positive values of the game - respect, teamwork, resilience and character development - we use rugby sessions to help young people build confidence, strengthen self-belief and develop skills that extend far beyond the pitch. Each session is designed not only to introduce the game, but to help participants apply these values to real-life situations, supporting their wider personal development.

Working together, we create inclusive spaces where girls and young women who may face barriers to participation can become part of a supportive community. These environments encourage peer support, friendship and a sense of belonging, while also opening up clear pathways into further participation and development within rugby.

As part of the programme, we deliver weeks of rugby-based sessions across schools in Bath and North East Somerset, Somerset, and Wiltshire. Each school is linked with a local grassroots rugby club, helping to ensure a clear and sustainable pathway from school-based engagement into community sport. This structure gives participants the opportunity to continue their rugby journey beyond the programme and build a lasting connection with the game.

Through this partnership, Bath Rugby Foundation and Maddy’s Mark are working together to ensure more girls and young women can experience the physical, mental and social benefits of rugby, while feeling supported, included and empowered both on and off the field.
